Lateef Onifade Undergraduate Appreciation Scholarship in Physics

I am excited to announce the establishment of the Lateef Onifade Appreciation Scholarship in Physics at my alma mater, Western Illinois University in Macomb. As a former graduate student in the Physics department from August 2009 to May 2011, I have experienced firsthand the incredible support and guidance offered by the university’s professors.
Originally from Nigeria, I came to the United States on an F1 student visa after earning my Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics from Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria. Today, I am a proud naturalized US citizen, married with two children-a daughter and a son. As a lighthearted aside, I have fully embraced my new Texan identity, even though I may not own a pair of cowboy boots yet!
The graduate program in Physics at WIU played a crucial role in developing my critical thinking and analytical skillsets. Through various experiments, I learned the importance of planning proof of concept (POC), a process that has become invaluable in my career in the IT industry. The mathematical physics courses I took provided me with a strong foundation in data science, while the exposure to Linux in the physics labs helped me master basic system administration at the onset of my career. These experiences have collectively enhanced my ability to consider all possible solutions before making decisions.
In line with Malcolm Gladwell’s “10,000-Hour Rule,” which emphasizes the importance of practice and dedication in achieving success, my time at WIU was filled with countless hours of practice, refining my skills and knowledge to become the professional I am today.
I am proud to have been one of the first Nigerians to earn a Master’s degree in Physics from WIU, paving the way for other Nigerian students to join the program. As a result, I will forever be a great ambassador for the university’s Physics program.
The scholarship aims to express my deep gratitude to the exceptional professors in the Department of Physics who not only nurtured my academic growth as an international student but also played a vital role in my professional development. Their dedication and commitment to fostering resilience, hard work, and a pursuit of excellence have had a lasting impact on my life. Now, as a Senior Software Architect with experience in government agencies and various private sectors including banking, healthcare, and aerospace, I can confidently say that my time at Western Illinois University has shaped me into the person I am today. It is my hope that the Lateef Onifade Appreciation Scholarship in Physics will provide future students with the same opportunities and support that I was fortunate enough to receive. Furthermore, I aim to inspire other international Physics graduates to start similar initiatives, continuing the cycle of giving back and fostering the growth of the global Physics community.
