EULA CORDELL LARNER WRITING AWARD

The Eula Ethelyn Cordell Larner Writing Award was established in December, 1994 in memory of Eula Ethelyn Cordell Larner by her daughter, Mrs. Rachel L. Jones and her nephew, Mr. James Bruner. Mrs. Eula E. Cordell (Larner) received a two year certificate from WIU in 1909, and a Master’s degree in English from WIU in 1960. She also attended the University of Illinois. She was one of the first women to write for the Illini newspaper.
Ms. Cordell (Larner) taught in Illinois until 1918, when she married and moved to Joplin, Missouri. She continued to teach school during WWII in such places as Pittsfield and Canton, Illinois, and received a lifetime teaching certificate. Her husband, Frank Larner also attended high school at Western. He went on to become a successful pharmacist and had a drugstore in Warsaw, Illinois for many years.

CRITERIA:
This award will be given to the winner(s) of an annual writing contest intended to promote creative writing among university students. The contest is conducted by the WIU English Department, and is open to all Western Illinois University undergraduates.
