Garrett Mooberry Memorial Scholarship

The Garrett Mooberry Memorial Scholarship, established in October of 2011, offers an annual scholarship to worthy Tazewell, Peoria and Woodford sophomore, junior or senior students majoring in agriculture at Western Illinois University. Students with an interest in animal science, 4-H or FAA experience or a farm background will get priority by the selection committee at Western.

Garrett Mooberry was an energetic, fun-loving cattleman killed in a vehicle accident just eight months after graduating with a degree in animal science and ag business from Western Illinois University in May, 2010. His death left a giant hole in his friends’ and family’s lives, and they established a scholarship for ag students at Western in Garrett’s name in 2011.

As a cattle kid in Tazewell County IL, Garrett participated in crops and beef projects as a member of Morton First Rate 4-H Club and carried on his love of farming into his college career first at ICC where he was on the Meat Judging team. At Western Illinois University, Garrett was a valuable member of Hoof and Horn, a hands-on beef club. He loved helping younger children learn to care for and show cattle. Garrett was well known for his cattle skills, traveling throughout the US to help cattlemen prepare their animals for sales and shows. He also maintained an Angus cow herd at his home farm. Garrett was happiest in the barn or in the tractor unless he could be showing cattle at one of the national shows in Denver, Houston, or Kansas City or at a local sale. He was well respected as a hard worker and skilled custom cattle fitter. As a member of Tazewell County Young Leaders, Garrett encouraged others to follow their hearts in whatever they did.

The Garrett W. Mooberry Memorial Scholarship is available to students currently attending Western Illinois University’s School of Agriculture. The scholarship is administered through the Office of the School of Agriculture, College of Business & Technology.
