The Sociological Masters Scholarship

HISTORY: To recognize that both Kenneth Mietus and Chris Adamski-Mietus launched their sociological careers after earning Masters Degrees in Sociology from W.I.U., they are sponsoring a graduate scholarship to be awarded to eligible sociology students enrolled in the sociology graduate program at WIU.

Kenneth Mietus enrolled at WIU as a freshman in 1959, earning a B.S.Ed. degree in 1964. In 1969 he earned the first M.A. degree in Sociology from WIU. He joined the WIU Sociology faculty in 1972, completing his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri in 1974. In the summer of 1977 he studied Polish Language and Culture at the Jagellonian University in Krakow, Poland.
While attending Seton Hall University as an undergraduate, Chris Adamski also enrolled at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow through the auspices of the Kosciuszko Foundation. It was there that she met Kenneth and they eventually married. Chris earned an M.A. degree in Sociology at WIU in 1983 and in time, joined the Sociology faculty.
Graduate study in sociology was a critical element in the professional career development of both Kenneth and Chris. In grateful acknowledgment of the value of their graduate studies at Western, Kenneth and Chris hope to provide scholarship assistance to outstanding graduate students in their pursuit of the Master’s Degree in Sociology.
CRITERIA:
Graduate Scholarship:  The primary recipient of the scholarship will be a graduate student in Sociology in good academic standing (GPA 3.00 +).  The recipient should have completed SOC 518, Classical Theory with no less than a grade of “A” and either SOC 531, Quantitative Research Methods or SOC 535, Qualitative Research Methods with no less than a grade of “B”.
 The recipient should submit a statement indicating how they plan to use their sociological skills upon completion of the Master’s Degree in Sociology.  Special consideration will be given to students of Polish ancestry.  Students must fill out an application.
