DR. JACOB BURLAK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Jacob Burlak Scholarship was established in 1980 to honor Dr. Jacob Burlak, who came to Western Illinois University in 1977 as chair of the Mathematics Department. Prior to coming to Western, Dr. Burlak was senior editor at “Mathematics Review”. This scholarship is given to an outstanding undergraduate in the Mathematics Department.
Dr. Jacob “Jack” Burlak died November 10, 1979 in Glasgow , Scotland at the age of 49. He was born Feb. 12, 1930 in Cape Town, South Africa. He was educated at the University of Cape Town, South Africa and the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England, receiving his Ph.D. in 1958. During his career, Dr. Burlak taught at the University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa; University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland; North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina; Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University, New York, New York; Duke University, Durham North Carolina; and the Mathematical Reviews, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Dr. Burlak was survived by his wife Netta Burlak and two children, Linda and David.

CRITERIA:
 Undergraduate student currently attending WIU
 Mathematics major
 Demonstrated outstanding scholarship through academics and activities in the major or through the department
