Bruce Engnell Memorial Scholarship

Bruce Engnell joined Western Illinois University, Department of Agriculture in 1967. During his time at Western, he managed the WIU swine teaching herd program, the WIU Swine Evaluation Station, the WIU Performance Bull Test Station and sales, and the Illinois Ram Tests and Goat Tests and sales. He coached the WIU Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Team and was the advisor of the WIU Hoof & Horn Club. He also taught Animal Science classes. As both a coach and as an educator, it was important for Bruce to know each student personally. He a truly an outstanding role model.

Bruce was a passionate supporter of both WIU and the livestock industry. In his role as supervisor of the WIU Agriculture Field Laboratory, he was able to promote the farm’s agriculture programs, opportunities, and operation practices not only to students but also to visitors, tours, agriculture related associations, organizations and businesses. He was widely recognized for his achievement at the local, state, national and international levels in various agricultural related areas.

In his classes and work environments Bruce shared not only his passion but he incorporated valuable life skills that have continued to influence students long after their graduation. Bruce sincerely enjoyed working with the students. He welcomed their input and opinions. He truly listened to their ideas and plans, and gave support to accomplish their goals. He felt it was important that students understand that true happiness and personal fulfillment is what gives life meaning and through this philosophy, he made a profound difference in countless lives. Bruce retired from the WIU School of Agriculture in 2011. Sadly, Bruce passed away in 2015.

CRITERIA:
Class level.· Sophomore or higher
GPA: 2.75 or higher
Activities: Preference will be given to a Livestock Judging Team member Gunior or senior on the traveling Livestock Judging Team)
Mq’or: If not a Livestock Judging Team member, an Animal Science or other agriculture major with strong connection to animal science is preferred.
1-2 page essay stating the role agriculture had played in your life and how pursing a degree in agriculture will help you with your life’s passion.
