WILLIAM AND JO SANDERS SCHOLARSHIP
The William (Bill) H. and Jo Ann B. Sanders Scholarship was established November 2001. The Sanders retired from WIU in 1992 after a combined 60 years of working for the University. Their commitment to Western Illinois University has been demonstrated in many ways, with their first gift of a weaving loom in 1978 to the WIU Library. They have been supportive of art students, and have made many special gifts in the past several years.
Jo Ann Brunner Sanders received her Bachelor of Science degree in art education from Ohio University in 1952 and her Master of Fine Arts degree from Temple University’s Tyler School of Fine Arts in 1958, at which time she came to the WIU Laboratory School to teach grade school and junior high art. She taught part-time in the Department of Art at WIU from 1970 to 1992.
William Sanders received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1950 from Washington University. He taught junior high art in Alton and completed his Master of Art degree at the University of Northern Colorado in 1953. He taught art education at Miami University in Ohio until 1966, and received his doctoral degree from Indiana University in 1965. Bill came home to Illinois in 1966 to teach in the WIU Art Department, where he met Jo. They were married in 1967. From 1988 until his retirement, Bill assisted Richard Law in managing the WIU Art Gallery.
