CHARLES WILLIAM GRICE, SR. AND JOSEPHINE LUMAN GRICE FLEISHER SCHOLARSHIP

The Charles William Grice, Sr. and Josephine Luman Grice Fleisher Scholarship was established in 2016 by Dr. George L. Grice in honor of his aunt and uncle. While at WIU, Jo studied education along with home economics while Bill combined his love of science with a passion for music. They were married in the summer of 1940, after which Bill accepted a teaching position at Wyanet High School where he taught science and worked with the band and choir.

On October 23, 1944 Bill left for overseas duty during World War II. On November 6, 1944, the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise left Pearl Harbor with Bill aboard. On May 14, 1945 fourteen sailors were killed-in-action, including ENS Grice. He was buried at sea and was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart Medal.
