DRS NAI-TUNG AND LEE-HSIA TING ENGLISH SCHOLARSHIP

The Drs. Nai-Tung and Lee-Hsia Ting English Scholarship was established in 1989 by family and friends in memory of Dr. Nai-Tung Ting. Nai-Tung came to Western in 1966, where he served in the department of English for 19 years, retiring in 1985. Dr. Ting was the author of “Chinese Folk Narratives: A Bibliographical Guide”, and more than 40 articles about folk literature. He died in April 1989.
His wife, Dr. Lee-Hsia Ting served as a member of the faculty in the department of Media and Educational Technology from 1977 until her retirement in 1993. She was born on February 7, 1923 in Yang Zhou, China. She married Nai-tung Ting on November 11, 1948 in Nanjing China. She was a graduate of National Central University earning her B.A. in 1944, receiving her M.A. in English Literature from Mount Holyoke College, her M.Sc. in Library Science from the University of Chicago (she was the first woman graduate in Library Science). She was a professor at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb and at Western Illinois University. She published on the history of the Sino-Japanese War with the Harvard University Press and numerous scientific articles. Mrs. Ting passed away at age 81 on Friday, January 7, 2005 in Houston, Texas. She resided in Macomb for more than 40 years prior to her move to Texas. She was generous to her family, friends, students and charities. She was very strong in her Christian religious beliefs.

CRITERIA:
 Undergraduate or graduate majoring in English
 Undergraduate must be junior class standing with a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA
 Entering and current graduate students must have a minimum cumulative 3.5 GPA
 Preference given to students enrolled at WIU from mainland China
 Demonstrate outstanding contribution to the field of English
